How to Extend Your EV Battery Life

Electric vehicles (EVs) may have fewer moving parts than their petrol or diesel counterparts, but they still rely on one critical and costly component—the battery. To keep running costs low and ensure long-term performance, it’s important to understand how to take care of your EV’s battery properly.

Just like any battery-powered device, the way you use and charge your EV plays a major role in its longevity. While battery technology has improved significantly in recent years, taking a few simple steps can help preserve its health and maintain your car’s range over time.

Think Before You Charge

Frequent charging may seem like a good idea, but topping up unnecessarily can actually speed up battery wear. If your car is already sitting at 50% charge and you’re only making a short trip, there’s no need to plug in. Each full or partial charge cycle slightly reduces overall battery capacity, so only charge when necessary.

Stick to the 20–80% Rule

To get the most life out of your battery, aim to keep the charge level between 20% and 80%, and charging to 100% should be reserved for longer journeys when you know you'll need the full range. Likewise, letting the battery drop below 20%, or worse, allowing it to fully drain, can cause long-term damage if done regularly.

Be Cautious with Rapid Charging

Rapid charging has its place—particularly on long trips where convenience is key—but it does come with trade-offs. The high heat generated during fast charging puts additional stress on the battery, which can lead to faster degradation if used too frequently. Where possible, opt for slower charging at home (typically 7kW or less), which is not only better for your battery but can also save you money.

Watch the Weather

Extreme temperatures can also affect battery health. While it's not possible to control the weather, you can take small steps to help. In hot weather, try to park in the shade to keep your car cool. In colder months, pre-conditioning your vehicle before driving can help bring the battery up to an optimal temperature more gradually, improving both efficiency and longevity.

Drive with Care

Driving style can have just as much impact on your battery as your charging habits. Rapid acceleration drains energy quickly and can put extra strain on the battery system. A smoother, gentler approach behind the wheel can help maintain a healthy battery, as well as extend your driving range.

Refer to Manufacturer Guidance

Finally, remember that different EV models come with different battery technologies. Always check your vehicle handbook for model-specific advice on battery care. Regular servicing will also help ensure that your EV remains in top condition—battery included.
