Government investment unlocks new charging options for EV drivers and fleets

The UK’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure is set for another major boost following the government’s announcement of a £63 million investment package. This will support the continued growth of flexible and accessible charging options for both private drivers and fleet operators.

Cross-pavement charging schemes, which allow EV drivers who park on-street to safely connect to their home energy supply, has received a £25 million investment boost as part of the package. This will make home charging accessible to thousands more households without driveways, and adds further options alongside the growing network of public charge points.

Many councils have already embraced cross-pavement charging, however, some local authorities have taken a more cautious approach. This is due to concerns over pavement trip hazards, maintenance responsibilities, and debates over who has priority to park outside properties. Installation costs for these systems can vary but typically range from a few hundred pounds for the hardware to around £1,000 including labour, making them a relatively low-cost solution for home charging.

The investment also includes £30 million to support the installation of thousands of new depot charging points, helping businesses electrify their fleets with easier, cost-effective charging at their own sites.

This latest government funding comes alongside rapid growth in the public charging network. According to the latest ZapMap figures (June 2025), the UK now has 82,369 public charging devices across 40,479 locations, offering 116,910 connectors, with 1,371 new charge points added in just the last month alone.

Whether charging at home, at work, or on the road, drivers now have more choice than ever, making the transition to electric driving easier and more convenient.

With Activa’s partnership with Bumblebee and Arnold Clark, our customers can take advantage of this growing network alongside dedicated solutions for home, workplace, and depot charging, offering a truly flexible approach to EV adoption.
